The changing of the seasons can be a melancholy thing, especially for those who just wish summer could hang on a little longer, wanting more time to live out the season’s carefree vibe. If your journey brings you to South Padre Island in the fall, your wishes will come true. Our island home stays tropical as the rest of the world goes into cool down mode, offering more opportunities to splash in the surf and savor the sun while also celebrating the season with air that is a little less humid and food that is spicy and delicious. Even if there isn’t much of a change in the weather in the fall on South Padre Island, when that calendar page turns to September, our taste buds begin to crave the fall foods we’ve loved our entire lives, and we at Franke Rentals have created this guide to must-try fall dining on South Padre Island, so you can feed your cravings, too!

Karma Coffee & Books

2500 Padre Boulevard Suite 8

Aside from looking at the calendar, do you know what the first sign that fall has arrived is on South Padre Island? It’s not colorful leaves or even the cooling weather, although the temps do drop a little; it’s the first sighting of pumpkin spice lattes in the wild! Karma Coffee & Books has long been our favorite coffee shop, offering a small selection of food, bobo drinks, and in the fall, our favorite pumpkin spice coffee. The bookstore portion of the coffee shop is always a delight to peruse as well, and on a rainy day, you can find us here sipping a cuppa and savoring the latest Stephen King novel.

Grapevine Café

100 E Swordfish Street

While yogurt and an iced coffee is a perfectly fine breakfast in the summer, in the fall, our thoughts turn to something fluffy and sweet, and on South Padre Island, we go to Grapevine Café when pancakes are on our mind. The entire menu is something wonderful, filled with savory dishes, sweet treats, and a Sensible Selections section that will help you keep to your diet, but their pancakes take deliciousness to the next level—especially their apple cinnamon pancakes, which offer a fantastic taste of the season! They also feature cinnamon roll French toast that is gooey, sweet, and probably not on the list of acceptable diet foods that your primary care physician handed you at your last appointment, but do you really care about that when on vacation?

Café on the Beach

3616 Gulf Boulevard

Soup is a very popular fall meal, and although our island doesn’t offer any restaurants solely devoted to this ultimate comfort food, there are many restaurants that do serve it, including Café on the Beach. Offering a menu filled with seafood, sandwiches, and the creamiest lobster bisque you have ever tasted, your fall visit will be incomplete if you don’t stop here for a taste.

Tom & Jerry’s Bar & Grill

3212 Padre Boulevard

oysters

Thanksgiving is still weeks away, but it is never too early to start planning where you want to eat if you are traveling to South Padre Island over the holiday, and Tom & Jerry’s Bar & Grill is one of our favorite fall holiday dining spots. Offering their regular meal of pub grub, pizza, and seafood, on Thanksgiving Day they also offer a special meal featuring all your favorite holiday delights.

Padre Island Brewing Co

3400 Padre Boulevard

We started our tale with pumpkin spice lattes and are ending with a pumpkin porter found at Padre Island Brewing Co, ensuring that your fall days on our island will be filled with the premier flavor of the season. Offering a surprisingly robust menu for a brewery, you can also satisfy your craving for soup with their soup of the day as you sip, savor, and relax on another beautiful autumn day on South Padre Island.

Your South Padre Island vacation is going to be filled with beach days, delicious evening dinners, moonlit nights, and all the comforts of home, especially as you chose Franke Rentals for your vacation rental. Your adventures will be memorable ones, and even though there is more than enough to do to keep your vacation itinerary full, you might want to take a few detours during your visit, exploring the towns around our island home that offer even more adventures. This guide the best day trip to South Padre Island was created from tips the locals have offered, ensuring that you will see the best this part of the world has to offer.

A Visit to Port Isabel

It won’t take long to get from your Franke Rentals retreat to the town of Port Isabel, a small town located just over the Queen Isabella causeway which offers a variety of adventures, including the Port Isabel Lighthouse. Located at 421 Queen Isabella Boulevard and hosting tours on a daily basis from 10 AM until 9 PM, Labor Day through Memorial Day (9 AM until 6 PM the rest of the year), visitors can climb the 75 steps to the catwalk at the top of the lighthouse for panoramic views you won’t ever forget. Tickets are inexpensive, just $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for children 5-12. Enjoy the opportunity to get an up-close and personal look at the 3rd Order Fresnel Lens that still lights the way for sailors navigating dark waters. The views may stimulate your appetite, and after the tour, a meal at Dirty Al’s Pelican Station, located inside what was once the historic Rio Grande Railroad Station, will be a treat for your taste buds.

Brownsville Adventures

Located just a bit further down the road is the larger town of Brownsville, famously referred to in a number of songs. Your daytrip journey will take you further inland, but the beaches of South Padre Island will be waiting for you upon your return. The history of Brownsville is a fascinating one, reflecting in the activities you may want to participate in during your visit. Take a hike along the Brownsville Historic Battlefield Trail, explore the history contained in the Stillman House Museum (1325 E Washington Street) a circa 1850s city founder’s house, or learn what makes Brownsville a wonderful place for your daytrip with a visit to the Historic Brownsville Museum, 641 E Madison Street. When hunger pangs strike, Chilmoli Mexican Steakhouse is up to the challenge of conquering even the heartiest of appetites, offering a celebration of Mexican food that will make you understand the difference between authentic Mexican and the restaurants that populate the streets of the Midwest!

South of the Border Excitement in Nuevo Progreso

The border towns of Mexico always offer a fun and lively adventure, and the town of Nuevo Progreso is just 64 miles away from your South Padre Island home sweet vacation home, making it the ideal destination for your Texas day trip. Explore cute shops filled with all the gifts, delicious restaurants that will remind you again of how good authentic Mexican food really tastes, and be delighted by the impromptu street performances that may take place while you are exploring. Dancers, singers, break dancers, and rappers are some common sights, and even if you don’t catch any performances, you will still find joy in the beauty of this cultural experience. Puffy Tacos from Iguana Restaurant, Av. Benito Juárez 183, are sure to become your newest obsession, so you might want to skip this delicacy unless you are planning on coming back sometime soon—they are that addictive! This is one adventure that will involve a little pre-planning, though, as passports or passport cards are required to cross the border.

The snow may still be falling where you live right now and the temperatures might be in the frozen zone, so of course, it makes sense to start thinking about your summer vacation on South Padre Island. Your daydreams may not make summer arrive any sooner, but as you sit and think about beach days and the hot Texas sun beating down on your shoulders, your mind wanderings may bring a spark of warmth to your icy existence. We at Franke Rentals want to help warm you up even more with this guide to the top South Padre summer activities and a peek into the comforts and luxuries you will find in our seasonal sanctuaries!

First Things First

The white sand beaches of South Padre Island have been haunting your dreams ever since the first thoughts of visiting in the summer entered your head, so of course the first thing on your vacation itinerary, and the most popular thing to do in the summer, is the beach. Pristine white sands feel soft and tickly against bare feet and cool blue waters will be a welcome relief from the summer heat. Stake your claim on a section of the sand, spreading out beach towels, chairs, and umbrellas to mark your territory and then the world is your oyster.

If you do nothing more than soak in the rays and the serenity of the sea, you can consider this the most successful of vacations, but don’t forget, the thrill seekers in your traveling group may want to check out the jet ski rentals or parasailing opportunities at Coconuts Parasailing and Jet Ski Rentals, 2301 Laguna Boulevard. SPI Sessions Watersports, 5717 Padre Boulevard, also rents jet skis, and also provides canoes and SUP gear for those seeking a less high octane beachy experience.

Stocking Your Pantry and Refrigerator

Now that you have had the chance to bury your toes in the sand, it is time to start thinking about the kitchen of your Franke Rentals summer escape. You may not want to cook every meal, but it is nice to know you could if you wanted to, and stocking the pantry and refrigerator can be fun with a visit to the South Padre Island Farmers Market, located at 8605 Padre Boulevard and open on Sundays only from 11 AM until 1 PM.

Strolling along the aisles, stopping at the tables and exploring the produce, baked goods, even gift items that can be found there really could be considered a Zen experience, even as others are doing the same. The sun will be shining, the sea may be heard in the distance and the foods you will be sampling will entice you to perhaps overfill your cabinets and refrigerator!

Fun for the Whole Family

South Padre Island Adventure Park, located at 21040 Ocean Boulevard offers an exciting and fun adventure for the entire family. Spend your day at the park riding horses on the beach, ziplining across the skies, or bouncing across the waters while astride the banana boats that really are as fun as they sound. The park offers a petting barn for your tiniest travelers, featuring pigs, cows, goats, and ponies and for an additional fee, pony rides are also available.

This part of the park has a children’s play area certain to delight your kiddos and is often used as a birthday event venue. Families traveling with older children will love the Island Fun Park, offering miniature golf and go karts and the Bucket List allows visitors to participate in ALL of the activities listed above for just one reasonable fee.

A Peek into History

Summer is meant to be lived outside, but there are exceptions to every rule and the Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site may be the activity that convinces you to break the rules of summer. This is the only remaining Texas lighthouse still open to the public and as you climb the 75 stairs to where sweeping views await, you might hear the whispers of those who have walked these stairs before you. This experience is not for children younger than 5 years of age and if you are visiting with older children, they must be able to climb the stairs on their own; no carrying kiddos up or down the steep flight of steps.

Hanging Out at Home with Franke Rentals

Perhaps the most popular activity on South Padre Island, no matter what the season, is staying home and relaxing in the luxurious and comfortable spaces of our Franke Rentals retreats. Choose a beachfront condo and watch the sun set from the balcony every evening of your stay, chill by the pool (community or private, depending on the property you choose), and enjoy the best night’s sleep of your life when you choose Franke Rentals. Reserve your favorite today!

After a long winter, the first signs of spring are always greeted with happiness, no matter where you live, but if you are ready for a taste of summer in your cold climate hometown, you might want to start planning an Easter getaway to South Padre Island. Offering temperatures that may climb up to 85 degrees, the sun will be shining down, and your Franke Rentals holiday hideaway will be offering comfortable adventures that will make you forget all about the uncomfortable weather you’ve been experiencing during the winter months. This guide to planning your Easter on South Padre Island getaway will bring a little sunshine to your seasonal sadness, giving you a little something extra to look forward to!

Building the Perfect Easter Basket

If traveling with children, they may be worried that the Easter Bunny won’t be able to find them, but after you tell them you have an in with the bunny himself, their minds will be put at ease. Of course, that is when your responsibilities begin, but don’t start worrying about packing a basket in your luggage; there are plenty of places you can pick up a basket, and all the goodies, during your South Padre Island vacation. And because you probably won’t want to drag the basket back across the miles, Dollar General, 4400 Padre Boulevard, will certainly be offering baskets inexpensive enough that you won’t feel bad about tossing them after their job is done and many of the goodies with which you may want to fill the baskets.

Sunrise Moments

If you were to stay home for this holiday, a sunrise service at your local church might have been one of your traditions, and it is a tradition you can carry on during your Easter escapades with us. Many of our churches will offer their own sunrise services, and they welcome everyone; Texans sure are a friendly bunch, in case you haven’t already noticed.

But maybe this is the year you want to do it a little differently, and if that’s the case, a sunrise walk along our sandy beaches can make all the difference in your celebration. There is a quiet serenity found in these pre-dawn moments, that time when the sky is still inky black and the waves are gentle. You can feel the chaos you carry in your brain begin to dissipate and the tattered edges of your soul begin to mend. All things are possible when the sun is rising over our South Padre Island beaches and the joy you feel at this moment may lead you into thinking Easter on SPI may be a new family tradition!

Hop on Back to the Beach

family on beach

Although you may head back to your holiday hideaway for a couple more hours of sleep after the sun rises, warm temperatures, sunny skies, and your beach dreams will encourage you to come back for a day of fun and frolic in the surf. You don’t need us to tell you how to spend your time on the beach, you’ve been dreaming about this for so long that you probably have every minute planned out, but if you want to stick with some sort of Easter theme, we suggest packing ham sandwiches in the cooler you bring down from your rental.

Easter Brunch

There are some holiday traditions that are just too delicious to skip, which means you may be looking for Easter brunch, if you don’t want to prepare it yourself, that is! Many South Padre Island restaurants are going to be open, and many will be serving a holiday meal, including F&B SPI. For $55 per person, guests will enjoy a menu filled with fruit, bagels, omelets, pancakes and even a kids’ menu filled with THEIR favorite dishes. Delicious, filling, and expertly prepared, we look forward to Easter brunch at F&B and we know that it will be a highlight of your vacation experience as well.

Although most families only travel as far as their own family’s homes on Easter, we at Franke Rentals think that this year you should shake things up a bit with a vacation to enjoy a South Padre Easter weekend. The weather stays in “the absolutely beautiful zone,” rarely raining and generally remaining warm enough to enjoy an Easter celebration at the beach, allowing travelers to return home with a very nice jealousy inducing tan. This guide to celebrating Easter on South Padre Island will show you everything you will miss if you decide to stay home and participate in the same old, same old for the 2025 holiday.

A Moment with the Easter Bunny

Bunny

When you decide to travel with children, it is important that you hold on tight to their favorite traditions or you might find yourself dealing with tantrums and pouts. Meeting the Easter Bunny is one such tradition, one that is actually enjoyed by parents as well, if only for its memorial value, marking the growth of their littlest angels from year to year. And so, we foresee a visit to La Palmera Mall in Corpus Christi, 5488 S Padre Island Drive, in your future, offering shopping and dining opportunities and the chance to meet the Easter Bunny. He sets up his “hutch” in the center of the mall, delighting children and parents while helping both to get into the spirit of the season. He won’t be there on Easter Sunday, however, so this is an adventure you want to take part in during the days that lead up to the holiday.

Sunrise at the Beach

For many, Easter wouldn’t be the same without the sunrise service and the churches of South Padre Island are very welcoming to new guests, but what if you feel uncomfortable attending church services where you don’t know anyone? High-speed internet in our Franke Rentals holiday hideaways will allow you to attend your own church service as churches all over the world have started to stream the event. But if that doesn’t work for you either, perhaps a walk along water’s edge as the world awakens will suffice. The serenity of the sea turns to joy in your heart with each step and as the midnight sky begins to lighten, cycling through a kaleidoscope of colors, the beauty and magic of the moments will certainly make you feel grateful to be alive and have you believing in bigger and better things.

Brunch at F&B, 3109 Padre Boulevard

The kitchens of our Franke Rentals retreats are luxuriously equipped with the finest of appliances, but not everyone finds cooking on vacation a fun activity and if that is your feeling on the matter, F&B steps up to the plate, offering an Easter Brunch that never disappoints. Featuring a menu filled with spring inspired treats, including blueberry pancakes, eggs benedict, and a bagel tower stocked with salmon, cream cheese, capers, and more, we can promise that no guest will leave this wonderful feast feeling hungry. Even better, the children’s Easter menu ensures that your pickiest eaters will surely find something that agrees with them.

Easter Day Fireworks, Entertainment District, 211 W Whiting Street

Wait, did we just say Easter fireworks? And did your South Padre Island vacation just get so much better because we did? The answer to both those questions is a resounding yes, and honestly, this is a tradition we can’t imagine living without. No matter how you spend your daylight hours on South Padre Island, celebrating the holiday in a variety of ways, ending the day while watching the sky light up with colorful explosions is guaranteed to make it to the top of your favorite Texas vacation list. And because the Entertainment District is where a large number of shops and restaurants are located, you can add a shopping expedition to your Easter adventures, perhaps finding the perfect gifts for your friends or family who didn’t get to join in on this Texas trip of a lifetime.

Browse Our Fall Rentals Here!

Summer-Like Weather

Many individuals will claim that the summer season is their favorite time to visit somewhere due to the warm temperatures. Laying out in the sun is always a magical experience especially when you come from somewhere with cooler weather. South Padre Island is typically at its busiest during spring break and the summer season while school is out of session. This leads to busier beaches and more cost for your overall trip. The fall season sees a step back in the number of visitors that South Padre Island receives. This means you get to have more space around you at the beach and enjoy activities without having to wait in line. Best of all, South Padre Island still experience temps in the mid-80s during the fall season so you can still get a summer vibe later in the year. Summer in the fall is never a bad way to spend your vacation in South Padre Island!

Sandcastle Days

One of the best reasons to visit South Padre Island during the fall is the variety of unique events taking place this year. This includes Sandcastle Days taking place at local favorite, Clayton’s Beach Bar. You will find that all of the island’s hottest events usually take place here at Clayton’s. Their annual Sandcastle Days is a fall favorite and perfect for the whole family. Clayton’s Beach Bar is located right on the beach with their own private beach area to use.
