South Padre Island in the Spring
With highs in the 70s and lows in the 60s, South Padre Island in March is a perfect getaway. Because peak travel is between May and December, if you come for St. Patrick’s Day, you won’t have many crowds to deal with, and you will likely miss a lot of the spring breakers. You can still swim here in March–the water in the Gulf of Mexico is pleasant, and it’s not yet hurricane season.

Kelly’s Irish Pub
This highly rated pub is the favorite Irish pub in South Padre Island. Their menu covers a wide range of tastes and offers everything from Scotch eggs to Mexican nachos. If you have never had an Irish egg roll, here is the place to try it. Enjoy Guinness battered fried shrimp, Fettuccine Alfredo, and even corned beef tacos. If that’s not unusual enough, in 2020 they added Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey!
Reviews praise the friendly service, great food, and personalized attention. Their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations often include Irish sing-alongs, dart tournaments, catapult contests, green pancake eating contests, and lots more fun.
Even though it’s chilly up north, South Padre Island will be pleasant and warm for you, especially if you decide to book a gorgeous beachfront rental! When you’re not getting your Irish on, you can see nature, go to museums, and learn watersports. Here are a few of the favorite activities in early spring.
Laguna Madre Nature Trail
If you’re a fan of marshland viewing, don’t miss this 1,500-foot nature walk. The boardwalk covers four acres of some of the best nature viewing on the island. You can see hundreds of species of beautiful coastal and migratory birds as they call each other. A turtle or fish might splash up as the butterflies flit around. You might even catch sight of an alligator or two!
Sea Turtle, Inc.
This organization is dedicated to protecting the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle. This endangered turtle is found primarily in the Gulf of Mexico and is one of the species that nest in large groups on the beach. You can visit to learn about their three steps to recovery of the species: education, rehabilitation, and conservation. Visit the permanent residents who cannot return to the wild sea; among them is a turtle named Allison, the world’s first sea turtle with a prosthesis.
There are several kiteboarding businesses in South Padre Island, all highly rated and popular. You may have to choose which one has the best availability! Air Padre, H2O Sports, Prokite South Padre, SPI Kiteboarding & SUP, and Red Dog Kiteboarding are among the favorites. It’s a popular sport, so make your reservations ahead of time.
Did you ever want to build one of those sand castles that look like they are straight out of medieval Europe or a fantasy land? Maybe you tried, but you didn’t have the right tools or know-how.
