In our homes, it doesn’t feel like the Christmas season has started until the tree is up and the walls are decorated, and that can go for a town as well, which is why we wait with bated breath every year for the South Padre Island Tree Lighting Ceremony, offering a greeting from our mayor, an appearance by Mr. Claus himself accompanied by an elf, and live holiday music that you won’t be able to keep from singing along with.
The tree signifies the beginning of Christmas, and its colorful boughs will bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart. This is the only night that you will be able to witness the official ceremony, but it will remain lit through the new year, so even if you miss the ceremony, you will still be able to see our beautiful tree.
South Padre Island Street Parade, Padre Boulevard, December 6
As the world seems to have turned away from parades, here in South Padre Island we hold traditions close to our hearts, and the SPI Street Parade is one such tradition. The procession follows Padre Boulevard from Mars to Acapulco, and as you sit in a lawn chair on the sidewalk you will see everything you expect in a parade, including lights, classic cars, and maybe even fire trucks and/or police cars, but the magic is in the difference the shimmering and colorful lights make.
And because the moon won’t be full for another week, the glow of the waning gibbous moon will not interfere with the glow of the Christmas lights of the parade. The parade begins at 6 PM, and judging for the best floats will be held at Padre Brewery (3400 Padre Boulevard), so why not join in the fun and enjoy a few new beers while there?
Lighted Boat Parade, Sea Ranch Marina, December 7
Knowing how much we love parades, you shouldn’t be surprised that there will be a second holiday light parade, but you may be a little shocked to learn that this parade is on water. The boats begin cruising through Laguna Madre Bay at 6 PM, each vessel more colorful and creative than the one before it, and as the cool winter breezes make you happy you chose to bring a thermos of hot chocolate to sip as you watch the cavalcade of boats do their thing, the colorful lights doing double duty as they reflect off the dark waters below, the magic of this December night will become a treasured memory you will never want to forget. Judging for this fun event will be held at Jim’s Pier.

Stick around after our tree lighting ceremony to enjoy the South Padre Island Street Parade. As the name suggests this event is a street parade. The South Padre Island Street Parade begins on Padre Blvd at 6:00 PM on Friday December 2nd. Visitors are encouraged to bring out their beach chairs and camp out from the sidewalk. The parade features floats designed by local businesses and families that are decorated with festive holiday lights. You will find some true love and admiration for the holidays on each float that drives by. Make sure to follow the parade down to Padre Island Brewing Company where the judging for the floats will be held. This local gastropub and brewery features delicious burgers, steaks, and seafood to enjoy for dinner. Lighted Boat Parade
The fun continues the day after the South Padre Island Street Parade where the Lighted Boat Parade will take place. Another great fireworks display coming up this year is the Labor Day Fireworks celebration put on by the city. The official address for the event is 211 W Whiting St but you can see them from most of the coastline.
SPI Wahoo Classic Fishing Tournament

This annual fishing tournament lets you enjoy a full three days of fishing out in the deep water. The entry fee is per boat so you can load up the whole family under a single price. Try your hand at catching some monsters of the sea while you try to win one of their celebrated prizes. The SPI Wahoo Classic Fishing Tournament will take place September 16th through the 18th with entry fees paid towards Jim’s Pier.
Annual Sandcastle Days
One of the most popular activities to enjoy on your visit to South Padre Island is the sandcastle building. The island features several different professional builders who will help you build your own masterpiece. Each year these professional builders will take part in the qualifying event that leads to the World Championship of Sand Sculpting. Of course, we are talking about the Annual Sandcastle Days. This year’s event will be the 34th consecutive year so expect just as much fun as in prior years. The 34th Annual Sandcastle Days will take place from October 6th through the 9th for a long weekend of sand castles and fun. Each year the residents and visitors of South Padre Island get together for a festive celebration of the holidays. This year South Padre Island will host our annual Christmas Parade and Lighted Boat Parade for a parade of holiday lights on land and sea. The Christmas Parade will take place on December 2nd as beautifully decorated floats will pass down Padre Boulevard. This will be our 33rd Annual Christmas Parade keeping the fun going. The next day on December 3rd the Lighted Boat Parade will take place. This popular event is a parade out on the bay where different boats are decked out in their best holiday lights. There will be designated viewing spots along the route that are absolutely free to the public. You can even register to participate if you have a boat rental and want to join in on the free fun. The holidays have never looked better than they do in South Padre Island!
