No one knows how to truly experience the best parts of South Padre Island more than the people who live there day in and day out, and we at Franke Rentals are those people. We don’t just work here, we live and play here, and we make it our business to ensure that visitors enjoy a better understanding of our idyllic island. As such, we are also the perfect people to show you how to live like a local during your Texas vacation. This guide to how to experience your South Padre Island trip like the locals do everyday will help you discover the off the beaten path adventures that will make all other vacation experiences pale in comparison.

Shop Like a Local

We can’t help ourselves. When we visit new places we also visit new shops, exploring gifts, souvenirs, and even home décor that we simply can’t find at home and your South Padre Island will be no exception. The difference is, you have Franke Rentals your guide, directing you to the shops we shop in, where prices may be a little lower and choices may be a little more varied. The shops below are some of our favorites.

Blue Marlin Supermarket, 2912 Padre Boulevard, Open Daily 7:30 AM- 10 PM

Ok, grocery shopping may not be the most glamorous of your SPI adventures, but our fully equipped kitchens do provide the means to enjoy a meal or two at home, and although we do provide all the cookware needed, we leave the food and beverages to you. The Blue Marlin Supermarket is our go-to grocery store, offering everything you expect from a grocery store, including an excellently stocked wine aisle and a deli filled with ready to eat items that will help cut down the work involved with making a meal.

South Padre Island Farmers Market, 8605 Padre Boulevard, Sundays 11 AM- 1 PM

There is a perfectly lovely produce department at the Blue Marlin Supermarket, but there is a certain charm in strolling the aisles of local farmers markets, picking out fresh and healthy vegetables, homemade jams, even unique gifts that can’t be found anywhere else and during your South Padre Island visit, our farmers market will provide all of the above and so much more.

B & S Kites, 2812 Padre Boulevard, Open 9 AM to 5 PM Most Days

On a sunny, yet breezy day at the beach, in addition to all the beach goers frolicking in the surf, you may also discover a group of people engaging in a 3000-year-old activity, that of flying kites. B & S Kites is where we go to find creative and colorful flying apparatuses, sharing the joy of kite flying with our littles who we hope will someday share the tradition with their own children. Reasonably priced and also offer spinners for yard décor (they make great gifts or souvenirs!), in February they sponsor a very unique indoor kite fest, something that needs to be experienced to be believed, so if your journey brings you to SPI during the sweetest month, we encourage you to explore this fun event!

The Epicurean Landscape of South Padre Island

We bet that when you think back to some of your favorite traveling memories, many of them revolve around the meals you devoured. The crepe you practically inhaled while standing on the street corner in Paris, the fish tacos from your Cabo vacation that you still dream about this many years later, and that big Southern meal that came with all the fixings, including grits and biscuits, during your tour of Savannah. Those meals were as important to the success of your vacation as the landmarks you visited, and when your journey brings you to the shores of South Padre Island, these locally loved restaurants will add another chapter in your book titled “Meals Worth Remembering.”

Josephine’s Kitchen, 3409 Padre Boulevard, Open Daily 7 AM to 2 PM

Remember that big Southern breakfast you enjoyed in Savannah? We think the ones served at Josephine’s Kitchen will easily compare, and yes, that includes the grits! Open every day for breakfast and lunch, the reasonably priced meals on the menu will make your budget happy as well. And although it isn’t really a secret menu, we invite you to explore the menu chapter titled Local Favorites really is our favorite, with the Victor Chilaquiles bringing the most joy.

Nautico Island Grill, 1313 Padre Boulevard, Open Daily at 11 AM

There is so much going on in South Padre Island that visitors often forget that we aren’t some exotic tropical island in the Caribbean, but are in fact, a barrier island in the state of Texas. So, what does that have to do with eating where the locals eat? One of our newer hot spot restaurants, Nautico Island Grill, has fast become popular for its delicious Tex-Mex menu! Serving lunch and dinner seven days a week and also offering a wonderful Sunday brunch (11-2), its authentic Tex-Mex menu never fails to delight, and although we love everything, if we had to recommend just one dish, Nauti’s Fish Tacos are what we dream about more nights than we care to admit!

F&B, 3109 Padre Boulevard, Closed Mondays

We at Franke Rentals lead busy lives, just as you do. We have kids with sporting events and school activities loading up our calendars, we have jobs that we love but sometimes it can feel we are never off the clock, and we have all the assorted daily chores that keep us from spending as much time with our life partners as we would like. Date night is popular in our households, and when we are sans kids for the evening, our favorite dinner restaurant is F&B. Offering an elevated dining experience with a steak and seafood centered menu, their sophisticated food options, specialty cocktails, and casually uncluttered décor really does make us feel like date night is something extraordinary. Oh, in case you were wondering, F&B stands for Food & Beverage.

Where We Play

As you can imagine, the locals love the beaches of South Padre Island, a familiar playground for us and for our families, and we know that you will love every second of your toes in the sand time, but SPI offers a variety of other places to play, to learn, and to explore, and we are equally at home in the South Padre Island attractions listed below, and although you may not be here long enough to feel at home, we know you are going to enjoy every adventure you experience.

Sea Turtle, Inc, 6617 Padre Boulevard, Closed Mondays

Chances are, you will encounter a friendly sea turtle while swimming in the waters that surround our island, and that encounter will provide a magical story to tell your friends and family back home. But sea turtles are an endangered species, and there are protocols involved with how you should react, protocols that you may not know without a visit to Sea Turtle Inc. Founded by a local pilot turned Turtle Lady, their mission to protect, conserve, and educate the world about the plight of the sea turtles is a worthy one that we stand behind, making Sea Turtle, Inc one of our favorite attractions, especially on turtle release days! Their volunteers are especially important during nesting season, and your journey to this conservation spot will introduce you to all that they do.

south padre activities

Laguna Madre Nature Trail, 7355 Padre Boulevard

When you live in paradise, you want to be outside enjoying it as much as possible, and on weekends, you may find us exploring the beauty of the Laguna Madre Nature Trail. It’s not very long, the boardwalk that crosses over four acres of marshland is only about 1500 feet in length, but the beauty of the landscape and the diversity of wildlife that can be spotted during a walk along the boards will provide a fascination for all who view it, perhaps leading to a lifetime of love for the natural parts of the world.

South Padre Island Adventure Park, 21040 Ocean Boulevard, Open Daily 9 AM to 6 PM

Boredom is not an option on SPI, especially when you take the time to visit the South Padre Island Adventure Park which offers a veritable treasure trove of exciting activities that will be enjoyed by the entire family. This is where we have our birthday parties for the kids, engage in romantic South Padre activities such as picnics and horseback rides on the beach, and find the thrills that make our hearts happy; zip lines, parasailing, and fishing expeditions are a part of what you can expect to find at this mega adventure park. Also offering a petting farm for the littles and an Island Fun Park with miniature golf and go karts, you won’t be able to do everything in one day at the park, but that’s ok, return visits are always welcomed!

The Best Places on SPI – Upcoming Events and Festivals

The best way to get to know a place you are visiting is by attending the festivals and events that are loved by the locals, and we have listed a few of the best places on SPI below.

South Padre Island Market Days, SPI Convention Center, January and February

We mentioned shopping earlier, but there is shopping and there is SHOPPING, and if you visit during SPI Market Days, you will learn the difference. Offering aisle after aisle of vendors hawking wares that include everything from art to zebras (ok, maybe not zebras), there is so much on sale during Market Days, we dare you to find something you wanted but isn’t on a table or under a tent!

south padre events

Tacos and Tequila Festival, September, SPI Convention Center

For those with a high tolerance for spirits and a desire for spice, the tacos and tequila festival held in September is perhaps the festival that best represents our island home. Offering two days of food, drink, and music, guests can expect taco and jalapeño eating contests, tequila tastings, and live cooking demonstrations. Every activity is our favorite at this festival, but the unique nature of its grito contest just makes us happy and if you don’t know what a grito contest is, your September visit to South Padre Island is the perfect time to learn!

Christmas Events That Will Charm

There are far too many Christmas events to list here, but suffice it to say Santa will be met, parades will be enjoyed, and the Holiday Sandcastle Village will bring you joy. The only white Christmas you will have on South Padre Island will be a white sand one, but the holiday sand sculptures created by the world’s best sand sculptors will make you forget about the snow forevermore. And the Annual Christmas Lighted Boat Parade will ensure that the magic of the holiday continues to sparkle brightly.

Even the Locals Love Franke Rentals

If you have ever taken a staycation in your own hometown you will understand the appeal of a staycation enjoyed in one of our Texas sanctuaries. The locals know what they like, and they like the comforts we provide, the luxuries that are plentiful, and the ability to relax and play without having to worry about a honey-do list that keeps growing longer every day. Your South Padre Island Trip will offer all of the same, and when you choose Franke Rentals, you can rest assured that the South Padre Island condos and house rentals we offer are top notch.
