As a barrier island located off Texas’ southern coast, South Padre Island is ideally positioned for viewing a variety of sea life and birds. When you’re ready to take a break from the beach, setting off on a wildlife viewing expedition is a great way to enjoy the beauty and nature of the area. Whether you’re a serious wildlife watcher and you’ve brought along your binoculars and zoom lens, or you simply want to catch a glimpse of some of the island’s most majestic creatures, be sure to add these top five spots for watching South Padre Island wildlife to your itinerary!
Laguna Madre Nature Trail
This trail consists of an elevated boardwalk that weaves its way a quarter of a mile through coastal marshland. With no admission fee, this is a budget-friendly way to get some fresh air while catching sight of some of the area’s coastal and migratory birds. It’s best explored in the early morning or later evening when the sun is less intense and birds are more active. Keep an eye out for heron and red-winged blackbirds, among others. If you’ve packed binoculars, be sure to bring them along!
South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center
Enjoy an up close and personal encounter with some of South Padre Island’s smaller creatures in the touch tanks at South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center. Here you’ll experience a variety of fish, starfish, crabs, octopuses, and snails, among other sea life. In addition to the nature center, they also offer small group tours out onto the water for dolphin sightings in the wild.
South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center, & Alligator Sanctuary
Situated in a beautiful bayfront setting, the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center, & Alligator Sanctuary is a great place to enjoy a walk along the water while taking in sights of birds, butterflies, and other South Texas coastal wildlife. The Sanctuary focuses on conservation and environmental awareness, while providing plenty of space and information for both the casual and serious wildlife watcher. Their grounds boast over a half-mile of boardwalks through tidal wetlands, five bird blinds, and a five-story viewing tower. Explore the grounds on your own or take a guided birding tour, where binoculars are provided, and a naturalist educator will help point out some of the many species of South Padre Island wildlife that call this sanctuary home. Kids will love feeding the gators at the gator pond, holding a juvenile gator, and learning fascinating facts about these creatures at one of the three daily gator talks. A butterfly garden and tortoise exhibit are also onsite, making there plenty to see and do at this well-loved sanctuary!
Sea Turtle, Inc.
This organization functions as both a sea turtle hospital and sanctuary, rehabilitating and releasing injured sea turtles and hatchlings as well as offering a home to sea turtles who cannot be released back into the wild. A visit to Sea Turtle, Inc provides an amazing opportunity for viewing turtles, terrapins, and tortoises up close and learning more about these amazing creatures and the hazards that threaten their environment. Meet Allison, the favorite resident sea turtle who survived a predator attack with only one flipper remaining. She now thrives at Sea Turtle, Inc sporting a prosthetic designed by an intern as the first successful sea turtle prosthetic in the world. Hourly turtle talks and daily feedings are a great way to learn more about the area’s sea turtles in addition to touring the facility. Baby sea turtles usually hatch between mid-June to early August, and early-morning releases into the ocean are a captivating sight to behold.
Dolphin Watching from the Gulf
The water surrounding South Padre Island offers one of the best locations for viewing this area’s most exciting wildlife. Here you’ll find dolphins jumping and playing, and the best way to get an up close and personal experience with dolphins in their natural habitat is through a boat excursion. Fins to Feathers is an excellent company that offers both dolphin and birding boat tours. Their intimate excursions include six people or fewer, so you won’t have crowds to contend with as is the case on some larger boats. As a company committed to conservation and education, you’ll not only enjoy a dolphin excursion with an eco-friendly footprint, but you’ll also learn more about these playful creatures. Their tours are 1.5-2.5 hours and are offered daily.
