Winter is a great time to visit South Padre Island. The island is as it is during Spring Break and summer, but the weather is still warm enough to enjoy the beach. Average highs in January are around 67 degrees Fahrenheit, average lows are around 57 degrees, and the sun is always shining. Read about the things to do in South Padre Island In the Winter below:
Take a Walk Along the Beach
While the weather may be too cold for swimming, you can talk a walk along the beach collecting seashells or set up a chair and relax to the sound of the ocean waves rolling in.
You can also walk along the Laguna Madre side of South Padre Island. The Laguna Madre Nature Trail is a boardwalk that crosses through four-acres of marshland. Many coastal and migratory birds fly here for the winter, so bring your binoculars for some great bird watching.
South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center
For even more bird watching, visit the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. The center costs $6 per person and has several trails where you will see all kinds of birds, including wood storks, egrets, ibis, great blue herons, hummingbirds, and much more. You also have the chance to see a variety of other animals, including alligators, butterflies, and marine wildlife.
During the winter the nature center is open from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Stop by the Visitors Center to pick up a map of all the trails.
Take a Sunset Dinner Cruise
South Padre Island is known for its amazing sunsets. The Southern Wave is a large catamaran that offers sunset cruises around Laguna Madre Bay. Enjoy a dinner of freshly caught shrimp, grilled chicken, grilled vegetables, steak, and fajitas while you stare out over the pink waters as the sunsets over Laguna Madre. Soda and water are provided as well, and if you want alcohol, you can bring your own drinks.
Sunset cruises are offered most days of the week and leave at 4:30 p.m. Each cruise lasts about two hours and the price for adults is $52 per person.
