Not every vacation experience is a family friendly one, but when it comes time to start planning your Memorial Day getaway, we are sure this is one holiday that you prefer to be one that the entire family will enjoy, making a South Padre Island vacation exactly what you need. Offering pristine beaches, fireworks displays, and all the comforts of home in our Franke Rentals holiday hideaways, we can promise this Memorial Day will be one to remember. This guide to the family friendly holiday activities you can enjoy during your South Padre Island Memorial Day weekend adventures will ensure that no family shenanigan is left undiscovered!
Isla Blanca Park, 33174 State Park Road 100
Honestly, you could spend your entire three-day weekend at Isla Blanca Park and not feel like you were cheated out of any family adventures! Offering access to one of the top beaches in the state of Texas, picnic pavilions, visitors can spend their day relaxing on white sands, or they can choose to set their adventurous side free, renting jet skis, parasailing, or even engaging in snorkeling or diving trips.
No adventure is too big or too small at Isla Blanca Park, and although we do hope you venture out a little further, we do know you will have a blast during your time here. Don’t forget the most family-friendly adventure of all, building sandcastles with your kiddos and if you aren’t sure of your skills, Sandcastle Building Lessons offers exactly what their name implies.

KIC’s Ice Cream, 2500 Padre Boulevard Unit 2
Memorial Day is, and always has been, considered the kickoff to summer, and what better way to enjoy a warm summer day than with ice cream? KIC’s Ice Cream offers a prime location just off the beach, and although you can’t go wrong with a scoop or two of any of their 16 flavors, their specialty sundaes, shakes, and mores will make your taste buds stand up and cheer! Especially popular right now is their Peanut Butter Lovers Layered Sundae, made with two scoops of their happy tracks ice cream, and layers of Butterfinger pieces and Reece’s Pieces then topped with whipped cream!
Gravity Park, 106 W Marlin Street
Remember playing miniature golf with your parents when you were a child? In the summer months they would head over after dinner, letting you and your siblings stay up late as you cheated, cried, got lucky, and walked from hole to hole, learning all kinds of life lessons you never knew you were learning. Well, today you can recreate that experience with your own growing family with a visit to Gravity Park, offering miniature golf and so much more!
Go Kart Roller Coaster, Children’s Go Karts, a 60-foot Ferris wheel, and two really unique “rides” the Rocket which is the tallest reverse-bungie in the world and Skycoaster, a giant swing from which you can enjoy the most stunning of views! Also offering arcade games, a climbing wall, and a trampoline ride, this exciting park appeals to children aged 2 to 92.

Dirty Al’s, 33396 State Park Road 100
Dining out while on vacation can be the best part of your experience, but when traveling with children it can also be a nightmare of epic proportions. It’s not your fault as a parent or your kid’s fault as a child, but really just a thing of nature; kids aren’t always mature enough to be on good behavior at restaurants, but fortunately, no one at Dirty Al’s will care! Offering a very reasonably priced seafood menu that even the pickiest of eaters will fall in love with, harbor views will make this casual restaurant feel romantic and slightly edgy.
Memorial Day Fireworks, 211 Whiting Street, May 25
Memorial Day falls on May 26th this year, but the fireworks extravaganza will be on Sunday, May 25th, not that anyone will mind. Costing nothing and starting at 9:15, the best sites to view the colorful sky explosions may be from any of the restaurants found in the Entertainment District. It’s impossible for the entire family not to fall in love with the colorful displays, so be sure to pencil this warm and family friendly adventure into your itinerary!

If you have ever underestimated the costs attached to a vacation, being forced to sacrifice some of the items on your must see list simply due to lack of funds, you will understand the importance of budgeting correctly for travel journeys. Budgeting can be difficult, however, especially if you have never visited before, unaware of fees, admittance costs, and even some of the costs associated with top attractions. Fortunately, you have found your way to our Franke Rentals page and this guide to enjoying a South Padre vacation on a budget, helping prepare you for the expenses and the wonders that your Texas journey will bring you.
Naturally Beautiful
The beauty of South Padre Island’s natural side deserves to be celebrated and there are quite a few places that not just celebrate the wildlife and nature, but conserve and protect, charging minimal fees and utilizing the money they take in to help protect even better.
Sea Turtle, Inc, 6617 Padre Boulevard
Founded by a contemporary of Amelia Earhart, pilot Ila Fox Loetscher fell in love with sea turtles during a Mexican visit and dedicated her life to saving as many as she could, with Sea Turtle, Inc. being the end result. Costing $10 per person for adults 18+, $6 for Seniors and Military, $4 for children 5-17, and free for the tiniest travelers who are 4 and under, this worthy establishment will bring some of your most treasured memories.
South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center, and Alligator Sanctuary, 6801 Padre Boulevard

Built to protect the flora, fauna, and natural landscape of South Padre Island, this fantastic center educates the public as it protects nature’s most vulnerable creatures, and yes, that includes alligators. Open daily from 8 AM until 5 PM, ticket prices are similar to Sea Turtle, Inc, with adults paying $10 per person, students/military/seniors paying $8, and Children 4-12 paying $5. Also offering an adventure package that allows purchasers to take a photo with a baby gator and snake and binoculars can be rented for an additional $3 per set.
Water Adventures
The waters that surround our island home are maybe our biggest attraction and visitors often are reluctant to stray far from the sandy beaches, making these water adventures popular ones.
SPI Sessions, (956) 455-5238
When you dream about hanging ten on your South Padre Island vacation, SPI Sessions is the first place we recommend offering private lessons for $60 per person. If you already know how to surf, but didn’t bring your board, they also rent surfboards for $35.
The Original Dolphin Watch, (956) 761-4243
Dolphins are the friendliest creatures of the sea and watching them frolic is a year round activity that ranges in cost from $16.63 to $18.48 per person.

American Diving, 33256 State Park Road 100 #104
Ariel fans understand that life under the sea is a fascinating one, and when you want a closer peek, diving is the best way to do so. American Diving is a full-service dive center, offering training, certifications, and dive trips that will take enthusiasts to sunken ships and other artificial reefs. Costs for training start at $900.
Time to Dine
Now that you have explored a bit of what to expect during your stay on SPI, it is time to enjoy a taste of what we offer in our restaurants. The fully equipped kitchens in our Franke Rentals retreats will help you cut back on meal costs, but we encourage you to explore the epicurean landscape as well.
Cheap eats can be delicious with a visit to Coconut Jack’s, located at 2301 Laguna Boulevard and offering an extensive menu of seafood, sandwiches, burgers, and more, all falling into the $10 to $20 price range. Have a special occasion to celebrate? This is one time you don’t want skimp on good taste and Liam’s Steak House & Oyster Bar, located at 202 W Tarpon Street offers the perfect way to celebrate, just not an inexpensive way. Steaks, oysters, and a variety of other delicious dishes come with a price tag that ranges between $50 and $100 but trust us; you won’t regret the extra cost.
On Average
What we have shown you here is just a sample of the adventures you can enjoy during your South Padre Island journey, but the best is yet to come. We are, of course, talking about the comfortable adventures you will enjoy when you come home to Franke Rentals every night, perhaps even saving more money there as well. We’ve already discussed saving money by eating in a few times during your stay, especially as dining out can be the most expensive part of any vacation.

But did you know it is entirely possible that you can spend less on one of our SPI sanctuaries than you might on a hotel room? Offering comfort, luxury, style, and surprisingly reasonable rates, our properties will be the best part of your South Padre Island journey. Reserve your favorite today!
As the year winds down, the chaos of Christmas has us all seeking peace, quiet, and maybe a little “vitamin sea,” and if you have begun to make your list of resolutions for the new year, may we suggest that you add traveling to South Padre Island to the top of that list? Resolutions are generally negative, making us feel bad when we eventually end up abandoning them, but if you resolve to do something positive, you can feel good about yourself all year long. Today, we at Franke Rentals would like to offer this report on all the ways travel to South Padre Island will ensure that your 2025 is a year that shines—especially when you begin it from the comfort of our beachy escapes. Learn more about the many ways to enjoy South Padre in 2025 below!
The Serenity of the Sea
When you were searching the stores for the only toy on your child’s wish list, discovering it was sold out in June, when you cleaned the kitchen for the millionth time after spending hours baking cookies for your friends and family, and when you stayed up late every night wrapping gifts, there were some bright moments. The realization that after December 25th, not only would life return to normal, but it would also signify the beginning of your beachfront shenanigans in South Padre Island was one of those bright moments, if you remembered to add it to your resolutions, that is. There’s a certain serenity that can only come from the sea, and as you sleep in every morning, walk along sandy shores at sunset, and relax comfortably with your toes in the sand, even if it is too cold to swim, you will soon forget about all the chaos of Christmas, feeling better than you have all year.

Resolve to Eat Well
You notice we didn’t say resolve to eat better, but to eat well, and a special occasion meal during your time on South Padre Island will set the stage for a year filled with the best meals. Send off the old year with a delicious surf & turf meal from Liam’s Steakhouse, located at 2020 W Tarpon Street. There is a beautiful luxury that occurs when eating a fine meal, especially when that meal is accompanied by a wine that pairs wonderfully, and because Liam’s sits on the bay, that delicious meal will be appreciated even more when the sun sets over the water. The old saying that whatever you are doing on New Year’s Eve will be how you spend the next 12 months of your life suddenly has a delicious new meaning, don’t you think?
Oohs and Ahhs
There is just something wonderful about a fireworks show and the New Year’s Eve Fireworks that can be enjoyed in the Entertainment District offers a family friendly way to welcome 2025. Beginning at 9:15, the beauty in the sky will be reflected in the waters below, offering twice the impact and three times as many oohs and ahhs, simply because of the beauty of the night. Ending early enough that homebodies can return home to finish out the year in the comfort of our Franke Rentals holiday hideaways. Or, if you aren’t ready for the party to end, the next paragraph has some fun options for you to explore!
Don’t Be a Stranger
In some areas it can be a bit awkward celebrating in the local bars, but this is Texas, and everyone is a friend; we simply don’t believe in strangers. So, when you aren’t ready for the night’s festivities to be over at the end of the fireworks show and you happen to see a parking lot filled with cars and hear the music and crowds echoing into the night, stop in, order a beer, and don’t try to keep count of how many new friends you make; the numbers will be too high, the beers will be too plentiful, and the fun will be never ending. If you need a name and a specific destination, Louie’s Backyard is the one sponsoring the fireworks and is known for its food, its drinks, and its party atmosphere. Located at 2305 Laguna Boulevard, it is also a great place to watch the fireworks.
Comfortable Celebrations
There are all types of people, and your type may be one that prefers to celebrate at home, so go ahead, put on your pajamas, pop some appetizers in the oven of our fully equipped kitchen, and while you’re popping, those bottles of champagne you stocked in the refrigerator won’t be popping themselves. You don’t have to worry about designated drivers because you chose to stay in and celebrate not just the new year but the comfort and luxury that is an integral part of your vacation experience when you choose Franke Rentals. Reserve your favorite holiday hideaway today!
Magic and Christmas have always gone hand in hand, and when you decide to spend your holiday in South Padre Island in 2024, you will be amazed at all the different ways you will find magic. Maybe it will be the colorful lights that brighten the night or the special events that we Texas do so well, or maybe magic will be found in the sparkle in your children’s eyes, the flush on their cheeks, and the excitement of waiting for the best day of the year to arrive.
And sometimes the magic can be found in the comfort, luxury, and style of the Franke Rentals retreats that shelter you during your unforgettable South Padre Island holiday getaway. This guide will help you discover all the ways this Christmas will be the most magical of all!
South Padre Island Tree Lighting Ceremony, 321 Padre Boulevard, December 5
In our homes, it doesn’t feel like the Christmas season has started until the tree is up and the walls are decorated, and that can go for a town as well, which is why we wait with bated breath every year for the South Padre Island Tree Lighting Ceremony, offering a greeting from our mayor, an appearance by Mr. Claus himself accompanied by an elf, and live holiday music that you won’t be able to keep from singing along with.
The tree signifies the beginning of Christmas, and its colorful boughs will bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart. This is the only night that you will be able to witness the official ceremony, but it will remain lit through the new year, so even if you miss the ceremony, you will still be able to see our beautiful tree.
South Padre Island Street Parade, Padre Boulevard, December 6
As the world seems to have turned away from parades, here in South Padre Island we hold traditions close to our hearts, and the SPI Street Parade is one such tradition. The procession follows Padre Boulevard from Mars to Acapulco, and as you sit in a lawn chair on the sidewalk you will see everything you expect in a parade, including lights, classic cars, and maybe even fire trucks and/or police cars, but the magic is in the difference the shimmering and colorful lights make.
And because the moon won’t be full for another week, the glow of the waning gibbous moon will not interfere with the glow of the Christmas lights of the parade. The parade begins at 6 PM, and judging for the best floats will be held at Padre Brewery (3400 Padre Boulevard), so why not join in the fun and enjoy a few new beers while there?
Lighted Boat Parade, Sea Ranch Marina, December 7
Knowing how much we love parades, you shouldn’t be surprised that there will be a second holiday light parade, but you may be a little shocked to learn that this parade is on water. The boats begin cruising through Laguna Madre Bay at 6 PM, each vessel more colorful and creative than the one before it, and as the cool winter breezes make you happy you chose to bring a thermos of hot chocolate to sip as you watch the cavalcade of boats do their thing, the colorful lights doing double duty as they reflect off the dark waters below, the magic of this December night will become a treasured memory you will never want to forget. Judging for this fun event will be held at Jim’s Pier.
Magically at Home for the Holiday in South Padre Island
Magic makes its presence known in so many different ways, and feeling at home even as you are hundreds or thousands miles from your own home is definitely a kind of magic. Warm, welcoming, and offering so many ways to celebrate Christmas you may find yourself reluctant to leave, even for the events we listed above.
State of the art televisions are where you can watch your favorite holiday movies on a chilly Texas night, snuggling under colorful throws and sipping hot cocoa as you discover that your life is wonderful as well. Fully equipped kitchens may encourage you to roll out cookie dough on stone countertops or maybe to go a little retro and try mulled wine for the very first time. Every room of our vacation escapes are designed to make everyone feel at home and welcomed and each space is ready to be used in all the ways you love.
Traditions Happen Here
Just because you are traveling, it doesn’t mean that you have to toss out all your old traditions it just allows you to add some new ones to the mix. Staying up late on Christmas Eve to put together complicated toys as your children sleep deeply in their rooms is an old tradition, but enjoying a glass of wine from the balcony overlooking the sea is a new one you may engage in every year. Reserve your favorite Franke Rentals holiday hideaway today!
With the warmer climate of summer, water activities are non-negotiable at this time of the year. One place you can count on for all your on-water activities is South Padre Island. The Gulf is rich in thrilling activities that go beyond ordinary swimming. Here are the top water activities in South Padre Island.
Enjoy a Cool Splash
The best way to kickstart your water experiences in South Padre is by enjoying that cold splash. The soaring heat of summer means any chance to cool off must be utilized properly. Sometimes, even washing a cold drink down your throat is never enough. You will need to immerse yourself in the cool waters of the sea for the best rewards.
Swimming on the island is suitable for both kids and adults. However, restrict your kids to the shallow shore for their safety. For the adults, swim your way to the deeper sections of the sea as long as your muscles can take.
Deep Sea Fishing
Fishing is the next thrilling activity that awaits at sea. Instead of the usual angling at the shore, South Padre Island allows you to hit the deep sea. This activity mostly happens in the company of professional anglers who guide you on the basics of the game.
Marine Wildlife Tours
The warmer waters of the Gulf are prime breeding grounds for most creatures of the sea. Marine wildlife expeditions are therefore a crucial part of your on-water activities in South Padre Island. On good days, you will be lucky to witness the mass migration of whales in search of better breeding grounds. Even when there are no whales, this island has never run short of sea creatures for you to see.
The ever-playful dolphins will be all over your vessel trying to imitate everything you do. Other important creatures to note include turtles and falcons.
Chartered Boat Competitions
Boat competitions are nothing new in Texas. Weekends are the best time for you to witness this spectacular show. Just as you have seen people build cars for street racing, boats are also being designed from scratch for water competitions.
These competitions also double as exhibitions to show how much the boating culture has grown in the area. Book your spot in any of the chartered speed boats and feel the thrill that comes with accelerating on water.
Sea Surfing
While some say sea waves are dangerous, others are banking on them to have fun. Sea surfers rely on those violent waves of the sea for them to have fun. Triggered by the prevailing weather conditions, winds blow across the sea leading to a particular pattern of waves. These waves form the perfect playground for surfers to thrive. Once you learn the balancing act, everything else falls into place.
Jet Skiing
Water activities in South Padre don’t get better than jet skiing. It is a luxurious way of having fun in the deep sea. This activity is best suited for couples who wish to explore the sea together. Solo vacationers too can enjoy the ski as they embrace the race against the prevalent Gulf currents.
Cruise to the Deep Sea
Deep sea cruises in South Padre Island come with no portfolio. Instead, you have a stress-free ride to the deeper waters with no goal in mind. Such rides help you explore even further. You have every little bit of everything at your mercy. From the beautiful views of the setting sun to the marine wildlife that is hanging closely, it is an effortless expedition of the deep sea.
Rent on the Island
Renting on the island is a crucial part of your on-water adventures in Texas. Instead of traveling over long distances to access the beach, you wake up to beautiful views of the sea each day. Properties in the island have been designed to match the needs of different kinds of vacationers. Whether you want to remain closer to the shoreline or prefer it further in the mainland, there are options to choose from.

You have a few options to choose from for your tours here on South Padre Island, but The Original Dolphin Watch continues to be a local favorite. This is the number one dolphin watch company in the area and is sure to show you a good time. Their dolphin watch eco tours are offered on a daily schedule with three options each day; choose from the morning special starting at 11:00 a.m., the afternoon dolphin watch tour at 1:30 p.m., or the lovely sunset dolphin watch starting at 5:30 p.m. These tours will take you out to areas where the dolphins frolic around in the water and show off for those on the boats. The eco tour brings up items from the sea floor to study up close. Adults will have just as much fun as the kids do as each tour offers a BYOB option but please no glass on board the boats. Go Snorkeling
With South Padre Island having such beautiful beaches, you can also expect it to be just as incredible under the water. Take a look for yourself by booking a snorkeling tour with Breakaway Cruises. Their snorkeling cruises are a family friendly activity. Laguna Madre is one of the few places on the planet with a high saline level that promotes a stunning ecosystem and exceptional creatures in the water. You can get the opportunity to see incredible animals such as balloon fish, butterfly rays, garden eels, and so much more. You will not be surprised that South Padre Island is a top 100 snorkeling spot in the entire world. Spring Break can be a busy time for snorkeling so make sure you book your spot on the cruises well in advance!
Go on a Dolphin Watch Cruise
If you prefer to stay out of the water but still want to be out on the open sea, book a cruise with The Original Dolphin Watch. Dolphin and Sunset Cruises

The Original Dolphin Watch offers daily trips out onto the water where you will be able to see packs of dolphins in their natural habitat. This company has been offering these cruises for years and always know the best spots to see the dolphins up close. South Padre Island’s mild climate make this spot one of the few where dolphins live year-round. You will be able to see bottlenose and spinner dolphins enjoy their time in the water splashing around. Guests are also able to add on additional packages to their tour such as an eco-tour. This educational experience allows you to collect and sample marine life from the ocean floor before they are released back into the water. Or you can book a snorkeling trip that allows you to explore underwater and see even more things unavailable to see from the boat. Perhaps the best option for Valentine’s Day is the sunset dolphin cruise that lets you take the regular cruise but with the sunset as your backdrop. You are allowed to bring beer or wine with you onto the boat to cheers to the sunset, but no glass is allowed. Trips are approximately an hour and a half in length and start at just $20, making this activity a budget friendly option.
