With the widest point of South Padre Island being just half a mile in width, you could say that South Padre Island could almost be considered one big beach. Many visitors choose South Padre Island for its phenomenal beaches, which not only comprise the majority of South Padre Island itself, but also boast a reputation for being the most pristine and amply sized beaches in Texas. Below, we’ve put together a guide to just a handful of the many beautiful beaches that South Padre Island has to offer during your stay. Read on to find out more about South Padre Island beaches!
Soak Up the Sun and the Surf in South Padre Island
South Padre Island is home to a variety of beaches, all sharing in common their immaculate condition (due largely in part to South Padre Island’s rule against glass containers on all beaches), their stunning locales, and their calm, shallow waters that make for easy swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and boating.
If you’re looking for a secluded beach, Barracuda Cove Beach is known for being empty almost year-round. It’s a wonder how it remains less populated than other South Padre Island beaches, especially since the beach is a great spot for shell hunting, fishing, sunbathing, and boating due to being protected from swells by jetties.
Other beaches that are even more secluded include North Access Beach (which actually encompasses a few different beach accesses) and Port Mansfield Beach. To get to these beaches, you must drive thirty miles north from Beach Access 6, at which point you’ll have reached Port Mansfield Beach and its accompanying jetties. This area is famous for remaining untouched, with no commercial development. As a result, you’ll want to know how to drive on sand and pack your own provisions, as there are no gas stations or water nearby. On this beach, you’ll find some of the best surfing waves in Texas, as well as a great spot for fishing for shark, redfish, flounder, and trout, among other species.
Isla Blanca Park on the southern end of South Padre Island holds Dolphin Cove Beach, another popular destination for sunbathing and fishing. However, Dolphin Cove Beach is one of the best South Padre Island beaches for jet skiing, as this beach has easy access to both water and land.
