Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Just a short drive from South Padre Island is Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, a vast wildlife refuge that is comprised of wetlands, prairies, tidal flats, and desert habitats that serve as the homes for a diverse array of wildlife. It’s a beautiful natural attraction that’s well-worth the visit during your time in South Padre Island.

Experience the Awe-Inspiring Beauty of the Laguna Madre Region

The Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is enormous, encompassing a total of 97,000 acres of incredible landscapes, home to animal species ranging from rare falcons and common white-tailed deer to endangered ocelots and jaguarundi.

Within the refuge, there is a diverse network of trails open to the public for hiking, wildlife watching, and wildlife photography. Bayside Drive is a particularly popular location, though private vehicles are not allowed.

When hiking or biking in the park, it’s best to plan your hike during the cooler hours of the day during March through November, as the warm Gulf Coast climate can take a toll on you-especially when you’re exerting yourself. Be sure also to bring lots of water, insect repellant, and sunscreen. Additionally, the refuge is known to have ticks, chiggers, and rattlesnakes. These are best avoided by staying on the trails.

The Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset, though the Visitor Center hours vary by the season, with normal operational hours being from 8:00am to 4:00pm. The center closes for holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The wildlife refuge is located at Buena Vista Blvd., Los Fresnos, TX 78566. You can reach the refuge by taking Highway 100 out of Port Isabel, exiting onto FM 510 at Laguna Vista and taking it to Ted Hunt Rd. until you reach FM106, at which point you will arrive on Buena Vista Rd.
