Longest Causeway Run

South Padre Island has long been loved as one of the ultimate beach destinations that Texas offers up. Calling to visitors in the name of sand, sun, and surf, South Padre Island is as vibrant and fun as it is aesthetically appealing. While it may be an oasis of activity for those who take to the waves, it’s also a runner’s paradise when January rolls around. This is the month that notoriously hosts the Longest Causeway Run and sends athletes sprinting for distance finish lines.

Causeway Run – Running Across South Padres Island

For the past 35-years, the Longest Causeway Run has beckoned to athletes looking to make the most of the sun and scenic beauty while they run the roads. Beginning at the Port Isabel Community Center, runners set off on a 6.2-mile race that leads them over the Queen Isabella Causeway, winding over the Laguna Madre Bay and finishing things up in style at Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island. This challenging run comes with the benefit of an incredible view for the entire trip on foot. Runners are immediately rewarded with snacks and a variety of prizes and awards once they cross the finish line. Fun and challenging, the Longest Causeway Race has continued to increase its participant numbers year over year.

Fitness Walk Option

While the Longest Causeway Run is an ideal event for those who love to run, there is also an option that caters to individuals looking to walk the course instead. The Fitness Walk course covers less distance at a total of 3-miles but also begins at the Port Isabel Community Center. Walkers will follow the designated route to the finish line at Padre Balli Statue. While the fitness walk isn’t a race, it’s a wonderful way to participate in the day’s events at a slower pace. Once walkers reach the statue on South Padre Island, a shuttle bus is waiting to take them to Louie’s Backyard to catch up with runners for the awards, snacks and more!

Race Logistics

Early Bird registration gives runners the option of signing up for $35.00 and walkers for $30.00. Those who register late in December will see prices jump to $40.00 and $35.00 respectively. Race t-shirts and participant wristbands can be picked up at the Port Isabel Chamber Office the week of the race.
